Below is a general guide showing ideal spin rates in rpm for different types of shots. More important than the exact number is recognizing whether a shot falls into your personal low-spin or high-spin range.
Chip shots: Low spin for longer rolls
For chip shots, which are designed to roll out after a short flight, spin rates should be on the lower end. Aiming for around 1,000 rpm for low chip shots (with launch angles around 6°) and up to 3,750 rpm for higher chip shots (with launch angles around 35°). Drives: Low spin to maximize distance
The spin rate on drives should be optimized to generate sufficient lift for maximum carry and roll, without producing excessive lift that leads to ballooning and increased drag. Here, with total distance being prioritized, stopping power is not as essential as with irons, meaning lower backspin overall.
The 2023 PGA Tour averages report driver spin rates at approximately 2,500 rpm for both the PGA and LPGA Tour.

With irons, the goal is to strike a balance between carry and control. That’s why we aim for a medium Spin Rate — enough to produce a mid-to-high ball flight without ballooning, and sufficient stopping power without compromising distance.
For men’s golfers, PGA professional Jason Dufner suggests the following rule-of-thumb: Aim for around 1,000 revolutions per number on the club. For example, spin rate with a 7-iron should be around 7000 rpm — give or take.

5 iron: 5,280 rpm
